Perla’s absence became its own presence, a quiet shadow that stretched over every doorstep and sidewalk. Parents memorized the last words their children said before leaving the house. Strangers made eye contact a little longer, measuring risk in every interaction. The corner store, the bus stop, the crosswalk—each place where Perla might have walked was now marked by an invisible line of dread. Life went on, but it moved differently, like everyone was walking around a hole they couldn’t fill or name.

Her mother kept her routines because abandoning them felt like betraying her. Fresh posters were taped over weather-worn ones. A light stayed on in Perla’s room. Holidays arrived, then left, their colors muted by the empty chair at the table. Over time, people stopped asking, “Do you think she’ll come home?” and started asking, quietly, “How do we live with not knowing?” No answer ever felt like enough.
