A cop pulled a woman over for driving while using a phone in her right hand, despite her not having a right hand.
A routine traffic stop has gone viral after a police officer accused a driver of something that many people online say should have been impossible.
What began as a standard distracted-driving citation quickly escalated into an exchange that left millions of viewers stunned after body camera footage surfaced online.
The footage has since sparked debates about police discretion, mistaken observations, disability awareness, and how far someone should go when they believe they’re right.
And even after the encounter became a viral sensation, the case continued making headlines as the driver prepared to fight the citation in court.
A simple traffic stop quickly spiraled into something bizarre
Kathleen Thomas, a 36-year-old fitness content creator from Florida who posts online under the name Slightlyoff.balance, was driving through Lake Worth in February when she was pulled over by a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, per the Independent.
According to the officer, he believed he had witnessed Thomas using a handheld device while driving.
Florida law prohibits drivers from texting while operating a vehicle, and officers are permitted to stop motorists they believe are violating the rule.
Body camera footage from the stop shows the deputy approaching Thomas’ vehicle and explaining why he had pulled her over.
“You drove past me holding the phone with your right hand, manipulating that phone,” the deputy told her.
At first, Thomas appeared to think the interaction was simply a misunderstanding that would quickly be resolved.
Instead, the encounter took an unexpected turn.
What followed would eventually be viewed millions of times online after Thomas shared the footage publicly.
The clip spread rapidly across TikTok, Instagram, and X, with viewers struggling to believe what they were watching.
Many assumed the situation would be over within seconds.
But it wasn’t.
The officer refused to back down
As the conversation continued, Thomas attempted to explain why the accusation didn’t make sense.
According to footage released publicly, the deputy repeatedly maintained that he had personally observed her holding a phone while driving.
Even after Thomas challenged the claim, the officer continued pressing the issue.
“Hand to God, you did not have your phone in your hand?” he asked.
The exchange became increasingly awkward as Thomas tried to convince the deputy that he had made a mistake.
When she denied using a phone, the officer repeated variations of the same question.
“The other hand to God, you did not have your phone in your hand,” he later asked.
Despite Thomas’ repeated denials, the traffic stop ended with a citation.
Court documents later showed she received a ticket for “Wireless Comm. Device/Handheld While Driving – First Offense,” carrying a civil penalty of $116.
Rather than paying the fine, Thomas decided to contest the accusation.
As news of the incident spread online, many viewers questioned why the citation had been issued at all.
Others focused on the deputy’s insistence that his observation was correct despite Thomas repeatedly disputing it.
The footage quickly transformed from a local traffic stop into a national story.

The internet rallies behind the driver
After Thomas uploaded the body camera footage, social media users flooded the comments section.
Many viewers expressed disbelief that the situation had progressed beyond the initial explanation.
Others encouraged Thomas to challenge the citation in court.
As the clip accumulated millions of views, support for the fitness creator continued growing.
Speaking later to CBS News, Thomas explained that while she initially laughed during the encounter, her feelings changed as the stop continued.
“Initially, [I thought], ‘Oh, this is going to be funny, which is why I laughed,’” she said.
“I cackled, more like it. But then it became very apparent when he did not laugh or interact in like, a friendly manner, that it was not going to go that way.”
She added: “I wouldn’t say it put me on edge, but it definitely left an unsettling feeling of, ‘OK, what is this? Where are we going with this?’”
As public attention intensified, Thomas prepared to appear in court and formally contest the ticket.
However, before the hearing could take place, the situation changed dramatically.
According to Palm Beach County court records, the citation was dismissed at the request of the sheriff’s office due to insufficient evidence.
ABC News later reported that the case was formally dropped after additional review by authorities.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the deputy had initiated the stop based on his real-time observations but that the case was ultimately dismissed following further evaluation of the circumstances.
The department stated: “Law enforcement officers are required to make decisions based on observations made in real time.”
Officials added that motorists always retain the right to challenge citations through the legal process.
Why the video shocked millions
Part of the reason the footage exploded online was because viewers eventually learned the key detail that made the officer’s allegation so extraordinary.
Thomas was born with a limb difference. Her right arm ends below the elbow. She does not have a right hand.
The moment this became apparent during the stop is what many viewers found so shocking.
When the deputy claimed he had seen her holding a phone in her right hand, Thomas simply raised her right arm.
“So, obviously not,” she replied. At one point she even joked: “So you wanna just call this a day?”
Yet despite that revelation, the citation was still issued.
Speaking to CBS News after the case was dismissed, Thomas reflected on the viral incident and what she hopes people take away from it.
“I was born this way. It’s never going to change. It’s never going to hold a phone,” she said.
Rather than focusing solely on the controversy, Thomas said she hopes the story helps increase awareness and understanding of limb differences.
“I would love people to take away is that limb difference is normal,” she explained.
“Somebody who looks different than you is normal. All of that is normal. Normal is whoever you’re most comfortable being.”
She also said she does not believe the deputy acted with malicious intent, suggesting instead that the situation highlighted a lack of familiarity with disabilities and limb differences.
As for the citation itself, it never made it to trial.
Court records show the case was dismissed before Thomas’ scheduled hearing, and authorities confirmed the ticket was dropped due to insufficient evidence, according to ABC News and court filings reported in May 2026.
