Woman Mistakes Deadly Illness For Perimenopause—Dies Suddenly

Mother Mistakes Cancer for Perimenopause – Dies at 44, but Spends Final Weeks “Living Fully”

Laura Dawson, a 44-year-old mother of two from London, died on June 29 after a battle with bowel cancer. Initially mistaking her symptoms—bloating and fatigue—for perimenopause, she was rushed to A&E with severe abdominal pain and later diagnosed with stage 3 cancer in March 2024.

Though early scans after chemotherapy looked promising, the cancer returned and spread by September. After trying several treatments, Laura chose to stop chemotherapy two months before her death to spend meaningful time with her family.

Supported by St. Christopher’s Hospice, she spent her final weeks at home and later at the hospice, where she passed away peacefully with her husband Ben by her side. Laura described her final weeks as some of the happiest of her life, embracing the time she had left with joy and presence. “Cancer has forced me to acknowledge death, but I’ve lived more fully than ever,” she said.

Ben and their sons, Jacob (17) and Theo (15), were open about her illness from the beginning. Laura left lasting memories, including sentimental gifts like watches for her sons to mark future milestones.

Ben called their 24 years together a blessing and praised her strength and grace through illness: “She saw the beauty in small things. She didn’t let this destroy her.” Her story, he said, was meant to help others face death with honesty and love.
