Spotted a Worm With a Shovel-Shaped Head? Here’s What It Could Be

A Strange Worm Showing Up in Everyday Places

Spotting a long, flat worm gliding across your garden or patio can feel unsettling. Its unusual shape and slow, smooth movement often catch people off guard, leaving many wondering what they’ve just seen.

These creatures, commonly called hammerhead worms, have become more noticeable in recent years, especially in outdoor spaces with moisture and shade.

What Exactly Is a Hammerhead Worm

Hammerhead worms are a type of land flatworm known for their distinctive head shape, which resembles a hammer or shovel. This unique feature makes them easy to recognize and quite different from typical earthworms.

They belong to a group of organisms called Bipalium, and their flat, glossy bodies give them a striking and unfamiliar appearance.

How to Recognize One

These worms usually have long, smooth bodies with no visible segments. Their coloring often includes shades of brown, gray, or black, sometimes with stripes running along their length.

What really sets them apart is how they move. Instead of wriggling like earthworms, they glide across surfaces using tiny structures that allow for smooth motion.

Where They Come From

Hammerhead worms are originally from Southeast Asia, but they’ve spread to other parts of the world through transported soil and plants.

Because of this, they can now be found in many regions where they are not native, especially in gardens and landscaped areas.

Where You’re Most Likely to See Them

These worms thrive in damp, shaded environments. You’re most likely to spot them after rainfall, under rocks, or in moist soil.

Patios, gardens, and areas with consistent humidity provide ideal conditions for them to survive and move around.

What They Do and Why It Matters

Hammerhead worms are predators. They feed mainly on earthworms and other small soil organisms.

While this might not seem like a big issue at first, it can become a problem because earthworms play a key role in keeping soil healthy and fertile.

Are They Dangerous to People

The good news is that hammerhead worms do not attack humans. However, they do produce a toxin in their mucus.

This substance can cause skin irritation if touched, so it’s best to avoid direct contact and handle them carefully if needed.
