Newly Declassified Documents Reveal Clinton Approved Plan to Link Trump to Russia in 2016

In a development reigniting debate over the 2016 U.S. presidential election, newly declassified documents suggest that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton approved a campaign strategy to tie then-candidate Donald Trump to Russia, despite lacking verified evidence to support the claim.

According to recently released findings from Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation, the Clinton campaign worked to divert attention from her growing email controversy by amplifying a narrative that connected Trump to Russian election interference efforts. The strategy, approved by Clinton herself, was reportedly based on a proposal from campaign foreign policy advisor Julianne Smith.

One of the declassified memos cited in the Durham report stated, “Clinton approved a plan proposed by one of her foreign policy advisors, Julianne Smith, to smear Donald Trump by magnifying the scandal tied to the intrusion by the Russian special services in the pre-election process to benefit the Republican candidate.”

The documents, made public at the request of Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and declassified by U.S. intelligence officials including FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi, raise fresh concerns about the politicization of federal agencies during the Obama administration.

A Manufactured Narrative?

The Durham investigation, which spanned several years, was aimed at uncovering the origins of the FBI’s “Crossfire Hurricane” probe and whether intelligence agencies mishandled political information in the run-up to the 2016 election. Durham’s findings suggest that the FBI may have failed to properly vet intelligence reports implicating the Clinton campaign in constructing a narrative around Trump and Russian interference.

Senator Grassley issued a pointed statement following the release of the documents:

“Based on the Durham annex, the Obama FBI failed to adequately review and investigate intelligence reports showing the Clinton campaign may have been ginning up the fake Trump-Russia narrative for Clinton’s political gain, which was ultimately done through the Steele Dossier and other means.”

“These intelligence reports and related records, whether true or false, were buried for years. History will show that the Obama and Biden administrations’ law enforcement and intelligence agencies were weaponized against President Trump.”

Grassley argued that the exposure of these efforts marks one of the most serious instances of political abuse of power in recent U.S. history, calling it a “political scandal and cover-up” with long-term implications for public trust in federal institutions.

Durham Findings vs. Years of Speculation

The Durham probe did not result in widespread prosecutions but did offer critical insight into the decision-making and communication among government agencies and political campaigns during the contentious 2016 election cycle. The findings also raise questions about the role of media narratives and how unverified claims can influence public opinion and electoral outcomes.

Adding fuel to the controversy, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard recently released separate documents showing U.S. intelligence analysts had concluded that Russia did not play a decisive role in Trump’s 2016 victory—undermining years of political rhetoric suggesting otherwise.

Alleged Coordination Between Campaign and Government

Further complicating the picture, investigative journalist Paul Sperry of RealClearInvestigations reported that sources have pointed to emails and text messages allegedly showing communication between Clinton campaign staff and officials within the Obama administration.

Though these messages have yet to be made public, Sperry claims that they may provide a more detailed look into the coordination efforts used to launch the Trump-Russia narrative, including the now-discredited Steele Dossier, which played a major role in early FBI investigations and media reporting.

What’s Next?

With the 2024 election cycle now in full swing, the implications of these declassified memos are likely to echo loudly through political discourse. Trump allies argue that the revelations justify previous accusations that the intelligence community was used as a tool of partisan warfare.

Meanwhile, Clinton allies have not publicly responded to the newly released material, though they have long maintained that Russian meddling was a legitimate concern in 2016.

Whether these documents lead to further investigations or fade into the background of America’s deeply divided political landscape remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the questions surrounding the integrity of the 2016 election and the actions of political and intelligence figures are far from settled.
