Mary Stevens Was Just 8 — Now a Texas Camp Is in Mourning

A Father’s Heartbreaking Loss: 8-Year-Old Mary Stevens Taken by Texas Floods at Camp Mystic“I’ve trained hundreds of boys to be strong, to win and lose, to get back up. But no one ever prepared me to lose my own daughter.” These poignant words come from a devastated father mourning his 8-year-old daughter, Mary Stevens, who tragically died after severe flash flooding struck Camp Mystic in Texas Hill Country during the July 4th weekend of 2025.

Camp Mystic, a beloved summer camp known for fostering joy, adventure, and friendship along the Guadalupe River, was overwhelmed when floodwaters rose rapidly—more than 25 feet in less than an hour—leaving campers and staff little time to escape.

Mary, remembered by friends and family as a bright and cheerful girl, was reported missing immediately. Despite tireless efforts from search and rescue teams, her body was found after several days, confirming the worst fears.

This heartbreaking loss has plunged the Austin community and the nation into mourning. Families, campmates, and locals are grieving deeply, while safety advocates are urgently calling for better emergency preparedness and stricter safety measures at youth camps—especially in areas prone to extreme weather events that are becoming more frequent due to climate change.

A candlelight vigil is planned in Mary’s memory, a somber reminder of the fragile line between joy and tragedy.

For the first time in many online spaces, people aren’t cheering for a team or a competition—they’re praying for a father who has lost everything.
