Make sure your card is never skimmed at the gas pump — keep your money safe with this simple hack

A safety-conscious content creator has shared a tip on how to check for cards skimmers at gas stations, urging viewers to stay alert. According to FBI estimates, this type of scam costs customers and banks over $1 billion annually.

The creator, known as FLM Flight on TikTok, posted a video demonstrating how to test a gas pump’s card reader by giving it a gentle pull. This method, he explains, helps detect if the equipment has been tampered with.

The video, which has garnered more than 618,000 views, features the caption: “POV: You checking the card reader to make sure you don’t get scammed.” Many viewers have commented in agreement, mentioning they also perform this check, especially given that compromised debit card cases rose by 96% from 2022 to 2023, according to FICO data.

Credit card skimmers are illegal devices that criminals install on machines like gas station pumps and ATMs to steal card information. Gas stations are particularly vulnerable since they often lack supervision at the pumps.

The FBI advises choosing pumps that are visible to station employees and, whenever possible, using tap-to-pay methods or paying inside. Gas pumps are more likely to be tampered with since there are typically no attendants monitoring them.

Experts also recommend inspecting card readers closely for signs of tampering, such as unusual coloring or materials, or a reader that feels loose. In addition to skimmers, hidden cameras or overlay devices may be used to record PIN numbers when customers enter them.

For added security, experts suggest using contactless payment methods through digital wallets, as these are harder to skim compared to physical card swipes or inserts.
