WWE Icon Dead at 60

The professional wrestling community was shocked over the weekend following reports of the unexpected passing of Terry Brunk, famously known as Sabu in WWE, at the age of 60.

He was one of the pioneers in popularizing ‘hardcore’ style wrestling events, which included the incorporation of barbed wire, folding chairs, and various other props into the wrestling ring.

The WWE released a statement regarding the passing of SABU.

WWE expresses its sorrow upon the news of Terry Brunk’s passing, recognized by wrestling enthusiasts as Sabu.

From intense confrontations involving barbed wire to remarkable high-stakes experiences, Sabu dedicated his life to the sport of professional wrestling,” AEW stated on X. “We extend our condolences to his family, friends, and fans.” Sabu’s cause of death was not mentioned in either announcement, and the circumstances surrounding his passing remain unclear, as reported by NBC News.

Born on December 12, 1964, this Staten Island native began his wrestling career in 1985 after receiving training from his uncle, Ed ‘The Sheik’ Farhat. Initially anticipated to excel as a technical wrestler skilled in intricate and perilous maneuvers, he instead established a reputation for his violent and flamboyant style.

Sabu gained prominence during the 1990s in Extreme Championship Wrestling, where he was recognized as a pioneer of hardcore wrestling, known for his daring leaps from chairs and his ability to drive opponents through tables and even barbed wire, as noted by WWE.

He competed against other legends of his era, such as Rob Van Dam, Mick Foley, and Taz, distinguishing himself in a wrestling landscape where his contemporaries were already renowned for their willingness to push the limits of their performances.

His brutal wrestling style, characterized by double-leg drops through tables and backbreaking falls from ladders, consistently captivated WWE audiences.

The pinnacle of Sabu’s WWE career occurred at Wrestlemania in 2006, where he teamed with ECW originals Van Dam, Tommy Dreamer, and The Sandman to triumph over the New Breed in front of 80,000 spectators in Detroit.

He left WWE the following year and continued to compete with New Japan Pro-Wrestling, AAA, CMLL, and numerous independent wrestling promotions.

Even in his late 50s, Sabu continued to wrestle long after many of his peers had retired.

His final match took place on April 18, where he emerged victorious against Joey Janela, albeit after being thrown through a table and landing on barbed wire.

Janela referred to Sabu as ‘my idol, a trailblazer, a gamechanger, and an icon’ in a social media tribute on Sunday.

Wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer labeled Sabu the ‘king of the death matches’ during a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, acknowledging his role in popularizing some of the most perilous stunts in the profession.

Meltzer remarked, “He was the ultimate godfather of it in every aspect.” The X account for the docu-series “Dark Side of the Ring” expressed that Sabu’s passing “is a shocking development” as he had recently filmed a segment honoring his legacy.

Wrestler Matt Hardy stated on X, “Sabu was a pioneering innovator who significantly contributed to the evolution of professional wrestling matches. The widespread use of tables in pro wrestling can be attributed to Terry Brunk, who transformed an ordinary object like a table into an essential element of his performances.” Hardy further described Sabu as “profoundly influential on the current wrestling style, despite the fact that many still fail to recognize his contributions.”
