The activists were last seen in downtown Cairo in the early hours of Tuesday morning. According to Ziad Bassioni, one of the flotilla organizers, their families reported that “they did not come home.” Organizers believe the disappearances are connected to the activists’ involvement in the flotilla, though Egyptian authorities have not confirmed whether they are being detained.
In a statement shared on Facebook, flotilla organizers described the activists’ potential detention as “unjustifiable,” noting their repeated efforts to secure official permission to participate. Campaigners previously told Middle East Eye that Egyptian authorities had not approved the initiative despite repeated requests.
The organizers have also lost contact with the owner of one of the five vessels intended for the flotilla. Local media outlet Al Manassa reported that the owner withdrew after receiving “threats and security pressure,” highlighting the challenges the initiative has faced on the ground.
