Former President Donald Trump attended a ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy. The event honored the long history and service of America’s naval forces, even as the federal government remains partially shut down.
Speaking before a crowd of service members, veterans, and officials, Trump praised the Navy for its dedication and strength. “For 250 years, the U.S. Navy has defended our freedom, protected our people, and projected American power across the world,” he said. “No shutdown can stop us from honoring the men and women who wear this uniform.”
The celebration included a military band performance, a wreath-laying ceremony, and a tribute to sailors currently deployed overseas.
Analysts noted that Trump’s appearance comes at a politically sensitive time, as negotiations in Washington continue over budget disagreements that led to the shutdown.
Despite the tension, the event drew a large turnout and was seen as a moment of unity in support of America’s armed forces.
