Person of interest in Nancy Guthrie kidnapping case detained for questioning

The development comes hours after authorities released surveillance footage appearing to depict “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother’s alleged kidnapper.

Authorities have detained a person of interest in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced at 8:23 p.m. local time on Tuesday that earlier in the day, “deputies detained a subject during a traffic stop south of Tucson. The subject is currently being questioned in connection to the Nancy Guthrie investigation.”

The individual is a man, NBC News reports, though it isn’t clear whether he is the same person captured in surveillance footage from outside Nancy’s home on Feb. 1, the morning of her disappearance. The FBI released Nest security camera footage from the 84-year-old’s front door as well as four still images from the video of the masked individual, whom bureau director Kash Patel noted was “armed” and had “tampered with the camera.”

The sheriff’s department noted that no press conference was scheduled for Tuesday evening following the person of interest announcement.

Officials are gearing up to search a location linked to the individual, ABC News reports. This comes after Nancy’s home was searched and declared a crime scene after the initial report of her disappearance.

Days after that search, authorities conducted a separate search of the home belonging to Annie Guthrie, the sister of Savannah and brother Camron Guthrie. Deputies were seen leaving Annie’s home wearing blue gloves and carrying brown bags, NewsNation correspondent Brian Entin reported from the scene.

Several media outlets, including Arizona TV stations KOLD and KGUN, received an alleged note demanding a multimillion-dollar ransom to be paid via Bitcoin in the days after Nancy’s disappearance. Though the first deadline of $4 million passed on Feb. 5, and the second deadline of $6 million passed on Monday, TMZ reported that the Bitcoin account allegedly tied to the note experienced its first activity on Tuesday.

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and Savannah Guthrie for comment.

Nancy was last seen on the evening of Jan. 31 outside of her Tucson home, after being dropped off by family members. She was declared missing the following day. A large-scale search was launched by local authorities, as Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos announced that her disappearance was being investigated as a crime.

Savannah and her siblings have shared several videos pleading for their mother’s safe return.

“If you see anything, you hear anything, if there’s anything at all that seems strange to you, that you report to law enforcement,” the broadcaster said in a video shared Monday. “We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help.”

The FBI and the Sheriff’s Department are asking anyone with tips to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. The bureau has set a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to her recovery or the arrest of anyone involved in her disappearance.
