My gas lasted 6 months when I learned this trick that a gas fitter showed me.

Do you notice that your bottled or natural gas is depleting more quickly than it used to? While many attribute this to suppliers or the usage of appliances, the actual issue often lies with the burners themselves. A gas technician has pointed out that dirty or blocked burners can significantly elevate gas consumption without any apparent indicators.

When preparing meals, food remnants, grease, or spills may fall onto the stovetop and burn, obstructing the gas outlets. If your flame appears orange or yellow rather than blue, it indicates inefficient combustion. Weak flames result in slower cooking and gas wastage.

Properly cleaning the burners is straightforward and cost-effective. You will require white toothpaste (not gel), 2 tablespoons of salt, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of liquid detergent, hot water, a large container, and a brush or sponge.

Initially, ensure that the burners are cool. Detach all components, including caps, diffusers, and heads. Apply toothpaste to the metal parts and scrub with a brush or sponge to dislodge grease and residue without harming the metal.

Subsequently, create a soaking solution by mixing hot water, salt, baking soda, and dish soap in a large bowl. Immerse all components for a minimum of two hours. Remove any remaining dirt, then rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly before reassembling.

After reassembly, ignite the stove. A strong blue flame signifies efficient combustion and optimal gas usage. If the flame continues to be orange, allow it to run briefly to stabilize. Ongoing discoloration may necessitate checking the nozzle or consulting a technician.

For optimal results, clean the burners monthly, prevent spills, and refrain from using abrasive cleaners or steel wool. Even older stoves can benefit from this maintenance, although a professional inspection may be required for injectors or valves. This technique is applicable for both residential and industrial kitchens, including portable gas cylinders.

Keeping burners clean not only saves money but also enhances efficiency and reduces cooking time. Give this method a try and share it with friends who wish to conserve gas—it truly is effective!
