Democrats Claim Trump’s Iran Strikes Were ‘Unconstitutional’

On Sunday, several Democrats responded to President Donald Trump’s decision to target Iran’s nuclear facilities, not with commendation for the reported success of the U.S. military, but with assertions that the commander-in-chief has breached the Constitution.

This includes Rep. Jim Himes from Connecticut, who serves as the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, despite the long-established executive authority to address threats under the War Powers Resolution, as well as the precedent set by Democratic presidents like Barack Obama, who frequently targeted both actual and perceived U.S. adversaries.

In a statement issued in reaction to the operation, Himes asserted that “Trump’s decision to initiate direct military action against Iran without Congressional consent constitutes a blatant violation of the Constitution.” He further expressed skepticism regarding the mission’s success by stating: “At this point, it is impossible to ascertain whether this operation achieved its intended goals.”

His doubts underscored a wider sense of discomfort among Democrats concerning U.S. engagement in the region, even when aimed at averting future threats. “We also cannot determine if this will result in increased tensions in the region and assaults on our forces,” he remarked.

“Trump is operating entirely beyond his authority and is once again infringing upon the Constitution. This represents an unlawful and alarming escalation. Bombing Iran brings us closer to conflict, not tranquility, and he is jeopardizing millions of lives,” stated Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.). “Congress must urgently enact our War Powers Resolution to restrain him.”

According to the War Powers Resolution of 1973, presidents are authorized to initiate limited military actions without the need for Congressional consent, which permits the use of force for a duration of up to 60 days to counter imminent threats or safeguard U.S. personnel.

Himes’ remarks arise in light of Iran’s extensively documented nuclear aspirations, its ongoing enrichment activities that contravene international agreements, and its backing of proxy militias and assaults on American forces throughout the region.

The recent military operation focused on essential nuclear infrastructure, targeting Iran’s underground enrichment facility at Fordow, its primary uranium enrichment site at Natanz, and missile-related nuclear assets located near Esfahan. President Trump praised the operation as a “highly successful attack,” stating, “Now is the moment for peace.”
