Chuck Schumer Facing Calls To Be Removed After Move Against ICE Agents

A coalition of Democratic senators put forth a bill on Tuesday that seeks to ban Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from wearing face masks while performing their duties, including during raids and the apprehension of undocumented migrants.

This legislation comes in response to video footage that has surfaced, depicting ICE agents arresting migrants while obscuring their identities, frequently dressed in plainclothes without any visible indication of their status as federal officials, as reported by The Guardian.

It is important to note that agents have started to conceal their identities due to threats from Democrats and affiliated groups, who have either doxxed them and their families or have made threats to do so.

The bill, introduced by Democratic Senators Cory Booker from New Jersey and Alex Padilla from California, mandates that immigration agents must prominently display their agency affiliation—such as ICE or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)—along with either their name or badge number. Additionally, it would restrict agents from wearing face masks unless there is a medical necessity.

“Members of the public frequently lack a means to verify whether they are engaging with authentic government officials,” stated Padilla, who was briefly detained last month after attempting to confront DHS Secretary Kristi Noem during a press conference in Los Angeles.

“This absence of transparency jeopardizes public safety by fostering confusion, fear, and mistrust, particularly in communities that are already under intense immigration scrutiny,” he asserted, without acknowledging the potential risks his bill could pose to ICE agents if enacted.

“It also heightens risks for law enforcement personnel by introducing uncertainty in high-pressure situations, especially when individuals are unable to differentiate between genuine officers and impersonators,” he added.

ICE has yet to publicly address the proposed legislation; however, acting ICE Director Todd Lyons has previously opposed altering the agency’s mask policy, citing concerns regarding the doxxing of agents.

“We conducted an operation in which ICE officers were doxxed,” Lyons stated. “Individuals are out there capturing images of their names and faces and sharing them online alongside death threats directed at their families and themselves. Therefore, I apologize if some are upset by them wearing masks, but I will not allow my officers and agents to risk their lives and the safety of their families simply because some individuals disapprove of immigration enforcement.”

The legislation emerges amidst increasing demands from officials in the Trump administration for Democrats to temper their anti-ICE discourse, following two recent shootings aimed at ICE facilities in Texas within the last week.

In a discussion with Fox News on Tuesday, border czar Tom Homan criticized Democrats for their rhetoric and reminded viewers that he had foreseen the rise in violence against federal immigration enforcers, referencing the two recent shooting events in Texas.

“I warned over two months ago, during interviews on your network and several others, that if the hostile rhetoric against ICE agents and Border Patrol agents persisted—comparing them to terrorists, as Congresswoman [Pramila] Jayapal has done, and likening them to Nazis and racists—it would ultimately lead to a situation where either a criminal or an officer would lose their life. I have witnessed this pattern before. I anticipated it, and I do not believe it is over,” he conveyed to host Martha MacCallum.

“This is a meticulously orchestrated assault. It stems from the inflammatory rhetoric. These extremists who wish to escalate from protesting to engaging in criminal acts are being influenced by members of Congress and senators who equate ICE with Nazis, and Congresswoman Jayapal has likened them to terrorist organizations,” he added.

“Consequently, these individuals, these fringe groups, feel empowered. If a member of Congress can vilify ICE, why shouldn’t we? In light of this, the security measures at ICE facilities have been elevated to the highest levels, along with those of Border Patrol facilities.”
