Trump met with boos at Club World Cup final forcing officials to quickly change jumbotron image

EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY: President Donald Trump did not receive the response he might have anticipated while attending the thrilling Club World Cup final between Chelsea FC and Paris Saint-Germain.

The 79-year-old president was met with a chorus of boos as cameras focused on him at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, June 13.

Donald Trump faced significant booing at the Club World Cup final.
Footage from USA Today captured the crowd erupting in boos as the jumbotron displayed the commander-in-chief saluting from his luxury box at midfield while the National Anthem played prior to the match.

The overwhelming boos prompted the screen to quickly shift its focus, but chants of “USA, USA!” ensued as the performance of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ concluded.

In his luxury box at midfield, Trump was accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, as well as NFL icon Tom Brady, media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Infantino moved out of the view of television cameras, while Trump remained stationary, ensuring he was fully in focus as Chelsea captain Reece James lifted the trophy and his teammates celebrated around him.

The unfriendly reception did not elicit a response from the MAGA leader, who later expressed his excitement about the experience of witnessing the final in person.

This was not the only instance where the president encountered boos during the final. Later, he was again met with boos as he joined Infantino in presenting the trophy to Chelsea, who stunned European champions PSG with a 3-0 victory in the final.

“It’s a significant event [competition], and Gianni is a personal friend of mine. However, it is wonderful to observe,” Trump remarked to DAZN, adding, “What we are witnessing today is somewhat of an upset. [Fifa has performed] exceptionally well; it is a sport that is expanding and is truly remarkable.”

Following his victory in the 2024 presidential election, Trump has participated in various sporting events, such as last year’s NCAA football match between Georgia and Alabama, as well as this year’s Super Bowl LIX.

On this occasion, the president came out to show his support for soccer as the FIFA Club World Cup reached its conclusion.

Donald Trump humorously suggested the possibility of signing an executive order to require that soccer be referred to as ‘football’ in America.

At the final match, Trump even joked about the idea of issuing an executive order that would officially change the name of soccer to “football” in the United States, aligning it with global terminology.

During a post-match interview, Trump expressed his excitement when a reporter suggested the issuance of a new executive order to formally rename soccer as “football” in the US.

“I believe we could make that happen,” he told DAZN.

He expressed his enthusiasm for the growth of soccer in the US and his hope that it would soon rise in the world rankings alongside other nations.

“[The US] is performing exceptionally well on the international stage, both politically and financially. I recently visited Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. Here we have Qatar, which has a significant presence, but you also have all the leaders, and when you look at NATO, all the leaders remarked, ‘a year ago your country was in decline, and now you have the most dynamic country in the world,’” Trump conveyed to the outlet.
