Speaking at Hamilton College in New York, Obama addressed Trump directly, saying, “I have deep differences of opinion with my most immediate successor — who’s now president once again.” He went on to express concern over what he sees as a decline in the government’s commitment to core democratic values.

At the center of the latest controversy is Trump’s Department of Education freezing $2.3 billion in federal funding to Harvard after the university refused to comply with demands to dismantle its diversity programs, ban masks at protests, and overhaul its hiring and admissions policies.

Harvard President Alan Garber pushed back, saying the school “will not surrender its independence or its constitutional rights.” The administration claims the move is aimed at curbing antisemitism, but critics see it as political overreach.

Obama, a Harvard Law graduate, responded with a public statement on X: “Harvard has set an example… rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom.” He urged other institutions to follow Harvard’s lead.
