Neighbor Asked My Son to Wash His Car for a Month, Then Refused to Pay – I Taught Him a Lesson of My Own

When Irene’s 14-year-old son, Ben, came home one Friday evening looking downcast, she immediately noticed something was wrong. He seemed drained and avoided eye contact as he collapsed onto the couch, his hands still damp from washing another car. Concerned, she asked him what happened.

Ben reluctantly explained that their neighbor, Mr. Peterson, had refused to pay him for washing his car for the past month. Mr. Peterson had promised Ben $50 per wash, but after the most recent one, he claimed the car wasn’t “spotless” and said he wouldn’t pay him at all. Irene could feel her frustration rising. She knew Ben had been working hard, spending hours ensuring the car was spotless, and it was clear to her that Mr. Peterson was simply being difficult.

When Ben mentioned he was owed $200 for the four washes he had done, Irene immediately handed him the money, reassuring him that he had earned it. But she wasn’t done with Mr. Peterson. She promised to teach him a lesson about exploiting her son’s hard work.

The next morning, Irene went to confront Mr. Peterson, who was obsessively polishing his car. She casually walked over and greeted him, pretending it was just a friendly check-in about Ben’s payment. Mr. Peterson tried to brush her off, claiming Ben’s work wasn’t good enough and that it was a “learning experience” for him. Irene remained calm and pointed out that Ben had taken photos of the car after each wash to show his grandfather, proving the work was done to Mr. Peterson’s specifications. She reminded him that they had a verbal agreement, and breaking it was like breaching a contract. Irene hinted at involving her lawyer, which caused Mr. Peterson to panic.

Faced with the threat of legal action and a tarnished reputation, Mr. Peterson quickly handed over the $200 in crumpled bills, apologizing. Irene smiled and made it clear that Ben would no longer be washing his car.

Later, when Irene gave Ben the money, he was amazed. He was proud of his mom, who had stood up for him. Irene reminded him that he should never let anyone take advantage of his hard work again. As they enjoyed lunch together, Ben spotted a “Help Wanted” sign at an ice cream parlor and jokingly asked his mom if he should apply. She encouraged him, adding that if the boss was difficult, she’d be there to help. Ben grinned, knowing he had his mom’s support no matter what.
