The Guthrie family’s grief was already a raw, open wound when a new kind of horror arrived: a ransom demand from someone who never had Nancy at all. Detectives say Derrick Callella saw their pleas on television, then hunted down their contact information—not to help, but to test a theory, to satisfy a morbid “curiosity.” He allegedly sent chilling bitcoin messages, mimicking a kidnapper’s voice while knowing he held no key to her fate.

For investigators, his lies are more than cruelty; they are obstacles, muddying the trail at the very moment every second matters. Each false lead drains energy from the search for Nancy, forcing police to separate noise from the faint signal that could bring her home. Callella now faces charges over the messages, yet accountability offers the family no real solace. Justice for a hoax is not the same as answers. And it is not the same as Nancy.
