FBI Detains California Man After Disturbing Messages During Nancy Guthrie Search — What Officials Say Now

When a family is desperate for answers, even one unexpected message can feel like a threat — and that’s exactly what happened during the search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie. As public concern grew, federal authorities announced that a California man had been taken into custody after allegedly sending alarming communications to the family. The arrest quickly grabbed attention nationwide, but officials soon stressed an important point: the case surrounding those messages is not necessarily the same as the case of Nancy’s disappearance itself.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice and federal court filings, investigators say the man—identified in reports as Derrick Callella—allegedly contacted relatives during the height of the investigation, prompting coordination between the FBI and local law enforcement. Prosecutors say the messages included ransom-like language sent across state lines, and he was charged through a criminal complaint with offenses related to transmitting a ransom demand and using a telecommunications device with intent to harass or threaten. Authorities also said the suspect is presumed innocent, and they indicated the texts were not linked to separate ransom-demand reports connected to the Arizona case.

As more details surfaced, court records and public reporting noted that Callella had already been facing legal issues in an unrelated matter. He was previously charged in a Los Angeles County unemployment fraud case tied to pandemic-era benefits, part of a broader investigation involving multiple county employees. While those older allegations are separate, the overlap in timing added another layer of scrutiny as federal officials moved forward with the new complaint related to the communications sent during the Guthrie family’s search.

Meanwhile, Arizona investigators have continued focusing on the disappearance itself and clarifying what is known versus what remains unconfirmed. Officials have addressed questions like why doorbell-camera footage may not exist from key hours, pointing to technical limitations such as a lack of subscription storage. The Guthrie family also released an emotional public appeal, asking for help and urging caution around unverified claims, including reported ransom notes and online speculation. Law enforcement has repeatedly stated that they have not named a suspect or person of interest in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance and that updates will be based on verified evidence as the investigation continues.
