Charlotte police officer and father of four dies suddenly after medical emergency

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is mourning the sudden loss of one of its own after a longtime officer and father of four died following a medical emergency, leaving a family, and an entire department, grappling with an unexpected and heartbreaking loss.

Officer Michael Miles, 39, passed away early Sunday, Jan. 4, at a hospital in Gaston County after suffering a medical complication, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. A specific cause of death has not been released.

Miles was a 13-year veteran of the department and had spent the majority of his career serving the Freedom Division in west Charlotte.

A Career Defined by Service and Mentorship

Miles joined CMPD on October 15, 2012, and quickly became a respected presence within the department. Beyond his regular patrol duties, he served as a Patrol Training Officer, a role that placed him at the forefront of mentoring and shaping new officers entering the force.

“He was a valued member of the Freedom Division and will be remembered for his commitment to service and his positive impact on those around him,” the department said in a statement. “He spent years mentoring and developing the next generation of officers.”

Before beginning his law enforcement career, Miles proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Colleagues say that experience deeply influenced his discipline, leadership, and dedication to public service.

Remembered as a Devoted Father

Outside of uniform, Miles was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his significant other, Hannah Kelly, who also works for CMPD in the Property & Evidence Management Division, along with their four childrenGavin, 16; Graclie, 14; Kayliann, 10; and Nolan, 8.

GoFundMe campaign established to support the family has raised more than $30,000 as of January 6, reflecting an outpouring of support from colleagues, friends, and community members.

“Michael served his community with honor, compassion, and dedication,” the campaign reads. “His legacy will continue through the lives he touched both personally and professionally.”

A Department in Mourning

The loss has resonated deeply throughout CMPD, where Miles was known not only for his professionalism, but for his steady presence and willingness to guide others.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police confirmed his death and echoed the department’s call for support and prayers for the family.

“Please keep them, along with his extended family and our CMPD family, in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this unimaginable loss,” the department said.

As Charlotte mourns Officer Michael Miles, he is being remembered not just for the badge he wore. He is also remembered for the leadership he showed, the officers he mentored, and the four children who now carry forward his legacy.
