Inside the Trumps’ unexpected choice for their honeymoon — and the reasoning behind it

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have access to the world’s most exclusive destinations.

But after their glamorous 2005 wedding, the couple made a decision that surprised many: they stayed exactly where they were: at Mar-a-Lago, the President’s luxurious Palm Beach estate.

While some might have opted for the Maldives or the Riviera, the newlyweds chose comfort, privacy, and meaning over hype. And nearly two decades later, that decision still reflects everything about who they are and what matters most to them.

A honeymoon at home — with nothing ordinary about it

“Why would we leave Palm Beach?” Trump said in an interview shortly after the wedding. “We have the most beautiful palm trees, right? Why venture out to some tropical island that could never match Mar-a-Lago?”

To him, the answer was simple: Mar-a-Lago wasn’t just where they got married, it was paradise. With sweeping ocean views, a private beach club, and over 62,000 square feet of elegance, the estate was the perfect setting to unwind after their star-studded nuptials.

“I don’t want to go anywhere else because this is the best place to be,” he told the New York Post, reaffirming their choice to forgo travel in favor of a serene stay in a place they already loved.

A venue full of family memories

The honeymoon marked the beginning of what would become a family tradition. Since their wedding, Mar-a-Lago has hosted milestone moments for the Trumps, including the weddings of Donald Jr., Eric, and Tiffany Trump.

The sprawling 17-acre estate has also become a central hub throughout President Trump’s presidency — serving as the backdrop for everything from official receptions to holiday gatherings.

And for Melania, it’s more than a residence. It’s a refuge, a place where she’s spent extended periods during Trump’s first term as president, away from the pressures of Washington.

When the estate was temporarily raided in 2022 during an investigation, the First Lady made her feelings clear, reportedly saying she was ‘angry’ about what she called an ‘invasion of privacy’ (via The Hill).

A choice rooted in meaning

For a couple known for doing things their own way, honeymooning at Mar-a-Lago made perfect sense. It wasn’t about fanfare. It was about choosing a place that felt personal, beautiful, and unmistakably theirs.

Today, as President Trump leads his second term and Melania continues to define the modern role of First Lady with elegance and discretion, their honeymoon choice remains a quiet, meaningful chapter in a story that continues to unfold.

And just like Mar-a-Lago itself, it’s aged beautifully.
