Trump slammed for mocking Rob Reiner and wife after apparent homicide, blames ”TDS”

Mocking someone who has just died is widely seen as a breach of basic decency. When such mockery appears to come from the sitting president of the United States, it takes on a far more disturbing weight. That is why comments attributed to Donald Trump following the death of filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner have ignited outrage across political and cultural lines, spreading rapidly and prompting fierce debate about tone, responsibility, and respect in public life.

Rob Reiner, an Academy Award–nominated director and performer, and his wife, Michele Reiner, were found dead inside their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon. Authorities have said detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department are investigating the deaths as an apparent homicide. Subsequent reports indicated that Reiner’s son, Nick, had been taken into custody and was being held on a multi-million-dollar bond, according to jail records. Officials have emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that details may evolve as facts are established.

Beyond his celebrated career in film and television, Reiner was known as an unusually active political figure in Hollywood. The Los Angeles Times once described him as a “political force,” noting that he moved far beyond the traditional celebrity role of fundraising and endorsements. He devoted years to understanding policy and advocating for causes such as marriage equality and early childhood education, earning respect even from political professionals who did not always share his views.

Reiner was also one of Donald Trump’s most outspoken critics. Over the years, he repeatedly questioned Trump’s fitness for office, calling him “mentally unfit” during a 2017 interview and later criticizing his character and conduct in blunt terms. While promoting the documentary God & Country, which he produced with his wife, Reiner accused Trump of exploiting religion for political gain and rejected claims that Trump represented Christian values.

Those criticisms resurfaced after Trump released a statement on Truth Social following Reiner’s death. In the post, Trump disparaged Reiner’s legacy and attributed his death to what he derisively labeled “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” language that many readers interpreted as mocking and inflammatory. The statement stood in sharp contrast to the customary expressions of condolence expected after such a tragedy.

Reaction was swift and furious. Commentators, political strategists, and social media users condemned the remarks as cruel and unprecedented, accusing the president of exploiting a violent death to settle personal scores. For many, the episode became less about political rivalry and more about whether public figures, especially those in power, should observe basic human decency when responding to loss and violence.
